About me

I’m Daniyal Saqib.

I’m an engineer at Snowflake, previously at Amazon and Microsoft. Alongside my engineering work, I coach software engineers through technical interview preparation and contribute to public education on system design, interviewing, and AI systems.

My work centers on engineering judgment: framing ambiguous problems, reasoning through tradeoffs, communicating a defensible decision, and improving through feedback.

More about my work
A message from me

For more than five years, I have coached and supported engineers preparing for system design interviews through InterviewingIO, Hello Interview, Aced by Exponent, and Pathrise. Over the last few years, I have also worked with engineers through private coaching. Working with engineers from junior through Staff level has shown me one unresolved preparation problem: for each system design question, how deep do you actually need to go?

Deep dives matter because they turn a familiar diagram into decisions you can explain and defend. InterviewLayer brings that coaching experience together with the questions and struggles candidates return to most often. As AI changes engineering work, system design now spans Infrastructure, Product, AI, and Inference, and more engineers are making these decisions every day.

InterviewLayer is free. It is designed to complement the strong content already available by helping you connect each question to the depth your role and interview require.

About InterviewLayer

Learn the decisions behind the diagram.

Build the judgment to design better systems and carry that understanding into your next interview.

Pillar 01 · Engineering

Become a better software engineer.

Understand how concepts work together to solve new problems. Learn to choose an approach, weigh its tradeoffs, and see where it can fail.

The question behind the work

How should this system work, and why?

Pillar 02 · Interviews

Prepare for interviews that keep evolving.

Apply that understanding in system design interviews and AI system design interviews. Adapt to new requirements and explain the choices you make.

The question in the room

Can I reason through a problem I haven’t seen?

What connects them

Concrete problems. Connected concepts. Decisions you can explain.

New challenges.
Connected solutions.

Today’s engineering challenges bring familiar concepts together in new ways. We start with a concrete problem and unpack the combination of solutions it calls for: how the parts work together, the tradeoffs they introduce, and what happens when something fails.

We explain why a combination makes sense, where it breaks down, and how it should change when the requirements change, so you can apply that understanding to new problems.

One problem, two perspectives

An AI assistant for uploaded documents

In engineering work

Make the parts work together.

Process documents in the background, retrieve the right information, and stream a response. Decide how failures and retries behave across those steps, and how the user knows what is ready.

In an interview

Make your reasoning visible.

Explain why document processing belongs in the background, what happens if a job runs twice, and how your design changes when documents must be searchable sooner.

Engineering judgment
in the AI era.

As AI takes on more implementation work, we believe system design matters even more. Engineers still decide what to build, how the pieces fit together, and whether the result meets the requirements.

We expect more of these decisions to reach junior and mid-level engineers. InterviewLayer is our attempt to help engineers build that judgment for their work and interviews.
